The lovely Shannon has brought such a warm presence to the Niche community. But don’t let her sweet personality fool you; this girl is an absolute beast! Her military background and superb focus have inherently given this hot Mumma stellar physical strength and a sharp mental game to boot.
Since walking through the doors at Niche in June 2017, Shan has quickly become an integral part of the community, regularly gracing the early morning, late evening and even weekend classes . It didn’t take much to twist this superstar’s arm to join in on all the fun at Comp Squad either! Within a few months, she was there giving it her all, nourishing her competitive spirit. All whilst wearing a smile! Be sure to high-five this fierce pocket rocket next time you get the chance to throw down with her- It’ll be a delight!
Why did you start CrossFit?
Well I am a little embarrassed to admit this but here goes….my husband Sas is a CrossFit Instructor and a few years ago he opened a Military Affiliate Box. Let’s just say at that point in time I was into Trail Running and not into CrossFit. The poor guy was band from mentioning anything CrossFit in our home eek! Once we moved to Perth I gave it a lash and I was hooked. How wonderful life became once the rules were relinquished and we can now both talk the talk.
What is your most memorable moment to date?
After returning home from Comp Squad, feeling slightly disheartened by not being able to yet again string together any double under’s or kip pull ups. Sas spent some time taking me over the fundamentals and I cracked them both on that very day. By all means I wasn’t doing big numbers but I still felt like I had won the Lottery!
What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
I am fond of running, cleans, deadlifts, thrusters and burpees. My least favourite movements would be the ones that I’m currently working on, all overhead squatting movements and gymnastics. However, every movement has its place and it’s all part of the journey.
What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
Leave your pride at the door, be patient and just keep on keeping on
What keeps you coming back to CrossFit?
The ‘Box’ itself as a whole, it is a fantastic facility, the trainers are phenomenal and the members themselves are pretty damn cool too! CrossFit is the closest form of training that I can relate to with my military background. I love to challenge myself both mentally and physically. I can’t think of anything else other than CrossFit that could satisfy me and my urge to just grind away.
What is one random, non-CrossFit ‘thing’ about yourself?
I completed 15 years in the NZ Army and resigned as a Sergeant for our family.
