HAVE YOU MET… GABI?

1 Sep, 2020

It’s hard to believe that this little superstar has only been doing CrossFit for 4 months. In that time, she’s racked up a whopping 130 classes at the gym… that’s 32 a month! It’s not just her impressive attendance statistics that have earned her the AOTM title. She always enters the gym with a smile on her face, a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn as much as she can. Most importantly she is an absolute pleasure to coach, always trusting in the coaches and keen to learn more. A spring chicken at just 20 years old it’s safe to say she has a long and exciting CrossFit future ahead of her. Congratulations GABI, our March Athlete of the Month!

Why did you start CrossFit?
After I had stopped dancing and was at a regular globo gym for 8 months my brother recommended CrossFit. I liked the idea that it was a sport encompassing all aspects of fitness- you get to do handstands, lift heavy, run, climb ropes etc. Being able to compete also interested me too. So, I started at Niche late last year and was hooked!

What is your most memorable moment to date?
I don’t really have one specific moment… but there are those memorable classes where the energy is high, music is pumping and everyone is cheering each other on – the community is what keeps me coming back!

What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
• I really like long, cardio-based WOD’s with movements like double unders, running and burpees.
• Least favourite WOD’s (that I know I should learn to like) include lots of strength based barbell work like Squats and Deadlifts specifically.

What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
• Keep persisting and be consistent. You might feel at times you are not seeing progress and then one day you can perform a new skill or you get a new PB!
• One of my new favourite quotes “To be outstanding, get comfortable with being uncomfortable” (Alrik Koudenburg), I think can really be applied to CrossFit because, let’s be honest, it can really hurt, especially in those gassy, muscle-burning WOD’s where you have to embrace the pain. Keep challenging your comfort zone and your perception of effort, because you can do more than you think you can (stay safe though, always!)
• Understand you will have your good days and your bad days- stay humble throughout the process.
• Don’t take it too seriously, get rid of any ego and listen to your coaches!

What is one random, non-CrossFit ‘thing’ about yourself?
I did rhythmic gymnastics and dance since I was about 9. I then went to Melbourne in 2015 to study dance at university! Now I am completing a Bachelor of Science… quite a difference
