Our Athlete of the Month for August is… STEPH!!! Steph (Undies) is one of those quiet achievers that plugs away… well that ‘plugging’ is starting to result in some serious gains in strength, body awareness and confidence in her training. Steph has been very consistent with her training lately and Boss Lady has been so so impressed with her commitment to her core work… which you all know is the most important thing in life. Always. Let’s hear from our Athlete of the Month for August.
Why did you start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit because a CF gym offered a great deal to a company I worked for. I always wanted to think I could be a gym bunny, so I ceased the opportunity. When I found myself waking up early and using public transport in the dark just to make classes I knew I had found something different.
What is your most memorable moment to date?
My most memorable moment to date is failing at box jumps and damaging my shins. I sat on the box and asked my coach if it would be ok to cry (he said yes)…he ran and got an ice pack before realising that both shins were pouring blood. While all this was happening my husband to be just kept on keeping on – it’s all about competition after all and he was probably winning. Treat ’em mean and keep ’em keen.
What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
I don’t think any movement can be classified as my favourite. I never look at the WOD before class or I would not come (as a result, I am never prepared for rope climbs – and I have the BEST socks!). My least favourite moves are push ups and handstands – but as I get stronger I fear them less.
What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
CrossFit can be intimidating. It is basically a cult of dedicated, powerful and motivated overachiever, or so it can seem. But when most people leave the box they go to a normal house, have a cool dog or horse and a normal job. It truly is a community and if you try just a little I can guarantee you will be met with enthusiasm and people that genuinely care about you and your wellbeing. Tell others they did a great job and say thanks to your coach after every session.
What is one random, non-CrossFit interesting ‘thing’ about yourself?
I could answer these questions for you in Brazilian Portugese (and will be happy to help plan any trips to South America).
