Des’s ability to light up a room (and the box for that matter) is second to none – you know you’re in for a good time when Des is in the class. Moreover, her consistency with training over the past few months has been stellar, albeit when it comes to CrossFit training, she’s no novice; Dessie has been doing this stuff for some time now and has been such a great role model for her peers in stepping outside the comfort zone with so many areas of training… going heavier with weights… even pushing harder and faster on her running which we know she loves. We know what she’s capable of and it’s been so wonderful to see her start to believe in it as well!!
Why did you start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit a few years ago because if I did one more Body Pump class my head was going to explode! In all seriousness, I needed a new challenge and something that would not be the same every single day. Being a gymnast in my younger years, I also loved that it incorporated gymnastics moves and mobility.
What is your most memorable moment to date?
It would have to be getting my one and only, unicorn muscle up during the open work out! So cool! Obviously a fluke, but I’m still working toward number two 🙂
What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
I love handstand walking in WODs and try to remind myself that front squats and thrusters build…character!
What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
My tip would be to only compare yourself to yourself but definitely soak in all the gymspiration you’re sure to see from the other amazing athletes.
What keeps you coming back to CrossFit?
The people! I also like having an excuse to eat pancakes… you know, because of all the gym-ing and stuff. Also, the dogs that hang around the gym are pretty amazing, too.
What is one random, non-CrossFit ‘thing’ about yourself?
I love cookies. And wine. And dogs. And brunch with cookies, wine and dogs.
