This athlete started her CrossFit journey with us in August 2016 after reading about one of her good friends Jemma, who was the August 2016 of the month. Every step of the way she has whole heartedly committed herself and embraced new challenges and stepped outside her comfort zone. Never phased by what others are doing around her she has always listened to her coaches and knows exactly what she wants out of each session. Most importantly she is a great example of what this community is about… she is always there to cheer, support and encourage others around her and always does it with a smile on her face (although we’re working on that mid-WOD pain face haha.) Well done to our Athlete of the month for June – Selina!! Fun fact: The CrossFit bug is rubbing off on the family with Selina’s boys often putting together their own backyard WOD’s with running and Kettlebells.
Why did you start CrossFit?
Before I had my three beautiful boys I did a lot of Pump classes, aero boxing and netball. I had been looking for a high intensity exercise in a class environment for years, but could never find the right timetabling as raising three boys and working part-time is a challenge in itself! Then my lovely friend Jemma posted on Facebook that she was athlete of the month at her CrossFit gym and I asked her what it was like. Next thing, the kids went off to school one morning and I was down at Niche with Jemma giving it a go!
What is your most memorable moment to date?
I think smashing out 45 Deadlift PB’s in the recent Master’s League competition. If you’re going to lift a PB, why not do it 45 times over right?!
What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
Favourite – anything that requires shoving the bar over your head. Apparently carrying small children around for years makes your arms strong!
Least favourite – unoriginal, but burpees. WHY is it so hard to get your body down on the floor and up again??
What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
Don’t compare yourself to other people doing the class with you – we’re each on our own journey. Embrace the scaling options, they’re there to help you, and before you know it you’ll be doing more than you ever thought possible!
What is one random, non-CrossFit ‘thing’ about yourself?
I’m a bit arty: You can find me painting, sewing quilts, knitting or upcycling furniture in my spare time
What keeps you coming to CrossFit?
The varied workouts are great. Every day is a new challenge, but it’s really the amazing coaches and lovely people at Niche that keep me turning up to push myself further than I think is possible. I always feel welcome and never judged, and that means the world to me.
