We’re super excited to announce our Athlete of the Month for July… MATTY A!!! Matt has been high on the radar for most of 2018 with his consistency in training & dedication to mastering technique. He ‘respects the process’ and has been attending both the gymnastics and weightlifting technique classes since day 1. Recently Matt has started seeing Nutrition guru Jamie and you’ll often see him in open gym doing alll the gymnastics drills programmed for him by Coach Kyle. Great to see him working towards his goals!
In May this year Matt competed in his first CrossFit competition with team mates Bryan and Josh and it appears he has caught the competition bug, having signed up for his first individual comp in September this year. Go Matt!
Why did you start CrossFit?
I had just left the Navy and had been doing F45 for about 6 months, which I really enjoyed. I just wanted and needed something more. I’d heard of CrossFit and I met Stacey on my foundation training session and signed up.
What is your most memorable moment to date?
The Open was great! Watching others compete and competing myself. I really didn’t understand what anyone was talking about when they asked if I was doing it though.
What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
I don’t really have a favourite movement or least favourite yet. I always underestimate how painful some workouts are going to be though. You’d think I’d have learnt that they all hurt.
What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
CrossFit is difficult. Don’t be to hard on yourself.
Compete with yourself rather than others. Listen to your body and try not to push beyond what you’re capable of.
What keeps you coming back to CrossFit?
I’ve met some great people and I really enjoy watching others get through a WOD. It’s a cool community to be a part of.
I also really enjoy learning new skills. Movements I can do now I just couldn’t imagine doing when I first started.
What is one random, non-CrossFit ‘thing’ about yourself?
I have a subscription to COSMOS.
