Athlete of the month for July is…. JOSH!!! It’s almost been a year to this day since Josh started his CrossFit journey here at Niche. He’s been consistent from day one having attended well over 100 classes with only one cancellation… that’s mighty impressive especially for a regular 5:30amer. Josh works hard, is patient (aka respects the process) and always has a smile on his face – except when it’s time for ‘game face’ of course. We’re mighty proud of his achievements to date and can’t wait to see what the next 12 months can bring. Let’s hear from our July AOTM…
Why did you start CrossFit?
Besides enjoying moving and being able to do the things I want to do without impediment, I have always felt like it is a responsibility of everyone to be as fit as they can possibly be in their given situation… one of my favourite quotes that sums this up is:
“No man [person] has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man [person] to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his [or her] body is capable.” – Socrates
What is your most memorable moment to date?
Good question! Generally, my morning workouts are a bit of a blur of pain and burning… I think that my most warm fuzzy memorable ‘moment’ is the acceptance I received when first arriving at NICHE, there was probably only a couple of sessions where I was a little self-conscious before feeling right at home.
On a more rugged note, the CrossFit Open was awesome and the Blue Team winning is a pretty great memory!
What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
I am a big fan of Deadlifts and I am a big hater of burpee box jump overs… and overhead squats…
What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
If you don’t want to be humbled, it’s probably not for you. If you want to get a great workout while fixing things you suck at, then give it a crack! I would probably also warn said person to not be put off by a close-knit group of people speaking their own weird abbreviated language and doing odd looking movements… you will get used to it after a while 😊
What keeps you coming back to CrossFit?
The movements I still haven’t mastered… they plague me! Also, the good people and the camaraderie of NICHE.
What is one random, non-CrossFit ‘thing’ about yourself?
I am an environmental scientist with a love of the outdoors and all the amazing things in it. If I’m not in the gym or at work you can normally find me out camping, hiking, spearfishing or exploring somewhere. I have a passion for trying to live as self-sufficiently as possible, particularly when it comes to the food I eat.
