Our Athlete of the Month for March is….ATHIRA!!! Athira has been with us from the early days and is a little (literally) bundle of happiness. As well as her cute/cheeky giggle Athira has made some serious GAINZ in her strength over the past few months (including 20kg+ PRs on some of her lifts in January!) and is always waving her pom-poms of support during training and competitions. Let’s learn a little more about our most huggable member and Athlete of the Month for March.
Why did you start CrossFit?
Mykal and I had just started dating when he told me about his love for CrossFit, I wanted to give it a go and went for a trial class, it took me a few hours to recover (I don’t think my body knew what it was doing then!). I have a dance and martial arts background but my first CrossFit class confirmed that although I’m active, I was nowhere near fit! My first birthday present from Mykal was a 1 month membership at my first CrossFit gym! And then 2 months later, I joined my Niche family 🙂
What is your most memorable moment to date?
Participating in the 3v3 comp last year with Lauren and Kerry-Anne and representing Niche for the first time 🙂
What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
Least favourite is definitely running! Most favourite wall walks and double unders (if my shoulders are not fried!)
What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
Don’t compare yourself to others, everyone has different strengths. Be proud of your own progress, no matter how small they are and always listen to your coaches.
What is one random, non-CrossFit interesting ‘thing’ about yourself?
I have done 8 years of Capoeira (which is Brazilian martial arts), and received my instructor belt a few years ago.
