Our Athlete of the Month for November is… CANDICE!! Candice came on board Niche earlier this year and has been an absolute breath of fresh air. Candice always comes to training with a smile on her face, is very reliable with her training and is an absolute stand out in terms of her presence and support with social activities and promotion of our gym. Let’s learn a little more about our newest Athlete of the Month, Candice!
Why did you start CrossFit?
I first heard about CrossFit via a colleague at work. The idea of varying, short, high intensity workouts really appealed to me. Having danced since the age of 5, I was looking for something new to try that could fill the void and would offer me a similar style of community.
I had no idea what to expect but took myself down to a trial day and I haven’t looked back! I still remember my first class watching another girl lift weight that to me seemed unbelievable! I even made a point of saying “Ha I’ll never be able to lift that much!”. Three months down the track we were doing a 1RM baseline and found myself doing a 90kg Deadlift which I never imagined I’d ever be able to do. It is easy to notice your progress with CrossFit, which is so encouraging and makes you strive to achieve new goals. I am completely hooked on CrossFit that I find myself looking the night before to see the WOD of the next day.
What is your most memorable moment to date?
Would have to be finally hitting my 2015 goal of a 100kg back squat. Best feeling ever!
What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
Anything with a barbell I love! Favourite movements are definitely squats and thrusters. Least favourite would have to be double unders and burpees! Although I’m starting to not mind the odd burpee!
What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
There are definitely occasions when you do look and see a WOD that makes you think “you have got to be kidding!”. But still go along following the rule not to cherry-pick workouts and when you finish the WOD it gives you the biggest sense of achievement that leaves you thinking, “Wow, I actually did it!”
Trust your coaches. Each class, regardless of the size, the coaches still give everyone that individual attention and support which is nothing short of impressive. I must admit I was hesitant at first to increase my weights especially having lower back pain in the past, but knowing that the coaches attention to technique is second to none, I soon felt completely safe trying new skills or progressing to heavier weights. My back is the best it has been in years and that has honestly surprised me.
What is one random, non-CrossFit ‘thing’ about yourself?
I lived in London for three years! Got to dance in the Notting Hill Carnival in 2013…next stop Rio! Also, I am a twin.
