This month’s AOTM goes to the athlete who brings the biggest smile and warmest heart to match! Richie has been gracing the afternoon and weekend classes now for almost 12 months and with his martial arts background is no stranger to hard work and mental toughness. He has one of the best work ethics in the gym, though you’d never notice how hard he is working with that massive smile painted on his face! He’s constantly striving to be better and is always there to cheer on his fellow WOD sufferers. We’re so happy to have Richie as our December Athlete of the Month and as an awesome part of the Niche community. Congratulations Richie!

Why did you start CrossFit?
The local Kung Fu school l was training at relocated NOR. I was looking something to fill the gap and gain extra strength and fitness. CrossFit seemed the natural choice.

What is your most memorable moment to date?
Rope climbs or going upside down! I don’t mind admitting i’m not a fan of heights, but l hope with practice to over come that fear.

What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
I don’t find anything overhead comfortable due to my shoulders – mobility lessons should sort that out. Box jumps or Burpees appear to be my specialty – I’m quite springy…

What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
Go at your own pace – start light then go heavier – don’t be afraid to make mistakes – SMILE. Weigh lifting can seem daunting to the beginner. My personal method of selecting the correct weigh is to see what Des is doing and go 10kg less.

What keeps you coming back to CrossFit?
The main reason is the people. Everyone is friendly and supportive. Learning new skills and discovering and improving new abilities l didn’t know l had is also a big incentive.

What is one random, non-CrossFit ‘thing’ about yourself?
I still do the Kung Fu and Chinese Lion Dance.
