Em has been flying high on the radar over the past few months with her consistency in training and dedication to working on weaknesses. Em started at Niche in January 2018, spreads the love at all the specialty classes and has already competed in her first local CrossFit competition. It’s an absolute pleasure having Em in our Niche family and we’re looking forward to watching her continuing gains. Let’s hear from our September AOTM.

Why did you start CrossFit?
Honestly.. I had done a month trial at a CrossFit gym back in 2017 and didn’t overly enjoy it. About 6 months later I had quite a few people say that I should start CrossFit and had just watched the Fittest on Earth doco SO… I signed up at my local gym and haven’t looked back. This was exactly a year ago!!

What is your most memorable moment to date?
I would have to say the stand out is the other week FINALLY getting the light bulb moment with my Snatch!! For ages I’ve stuck with my little grey safety plates but Stace was there jumping around all excited telling me I could up the weight so I did… MAN it felt good!!

What is your most and least favourite WOD or movement?
Most favourite WOD is a long ass met-con.. Something with running. I HATE running but it’s the kind of movement where you just have to put one foot in front of the other & there’s no time to think about stopping or taking a break. I love getting into that dark place in a met-con and gritting my teeth to keep pushing. My least favourite movement would have to be running on it’s own.

What tip would you give someone just starting in CrossFit?
Stick with it and don’t compare yourself against the others in the class that are moving heavy weights or up doing handstands. It will be a slow process but quitting isn’t going to speed it up. Learn to love the daily grind of just showing up and doing your thing.

What keeps you coming back to CrossFit?
For me it’s about setting myself little goals and always aiming to be better than I was yesterday. I’ve never stuck to something for this long and I think that’s partly because I didn’t think I was capable of pushing myself so hard and also the wonderful family that is Niche 🙂 I love the people here.. They all make showing up at 5pm all the more worth it.

What is one random, non-CrossFit ‘thing’ about yourself?
I make a mean cob loaf.
